currently the only fix seems to be (according to your link) to take a picture of my character, and recreate as best as possible, or count tick.

Generally, however, players can start a new playthrough with an old custom Shepard if they prefer. yes auto updates are on, the problem persists as it did at launch, me1 uses sliders, me2 takes raw data from sliders and uses default custom face code as a placeholder, me3 reads faces code as if actual face but ends up just being the default face. Because of the new options and the changes to character creation in Mass Effect Legendary Edition, these imports may not be exact and may require a few tweaks. Most importantly, players who want to relive the nostalgia of the classic trilogy and import their original custom Shepard may do so. They can also import the same face between games without necessarily importing an entire save file. While this feature was only available in Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 in the classic games, Face Codes are now part of every game's character creation in Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Each custom Shepard is given a unique Face Code, visible at the bottom of the screen in character creation and at the top of the screen in the Squad menu during the game, based on the positions of the various sliders. The new and expanded character customization options for Commander Shepard in Mass Effect Legendary Edition allow players to create a character that resonates with them, but some players may miss their original Shepard from the classic games.
